A gentle Hatha class is good for aging bodies. But what happens when you speed the practice up and force the brain to keep pace with colored paddles, verbal cues and the sudden clang of a gong? A new randomized controlled trial set out to answer exactly that — and the results suggest that a faster, cognitively demanding style of yoga may sharpen memory in ways slow-flow practice does not.
What the Study Found
The pilot trial, published on September 6, 2026 in Scientific Reports (part of the Nature portfolio), pitted a novel intervention called YogaCue against traditional Hatha yoga in adults aged 60 to 90. Both groups practiced three times a week for 24 weeks under certified instructors, in hour-long sessions.
